The Medieval Route
Many, many towns in the Emporda conserve their ancient medieval old town in perfect condition and we can also find monuments and historic buildings of great cultural interest.
We recommend the routes to the ampordanese towns of Pals, Peratallada, Monells, Torreolla de Montgri and Ullastret. It is worth mentioning that the Iberian town of Ullastret has yielded the greatest collection representing Iberian culture yet to be discovered in Catalunya.
The Romanesque Route
Around about the city of Figueres there are many well preserved Romanesque monuments from which one can observe building styles through changing historical periods, which combine to form an exceptional collection of Catalan religious period architecture.
The 3 most renowned monuments are the Monastery of Santa Maria of Vilabertran, an historic artistic monument since 1930, the Monastery of Sant Pere of Rodes and the Benedictine Monastery of Sant Quirze de Colera.
The Dali Triangle
This consists of 3 locations, a visit to which will help you get to know and appreciate the work of this eccentric Catalan painter, born in Figueres.
The Dali Museum Theatre was built over the stones of the old theatre of Figueres and houses an incalculable quantity of works representing the entire career of the artist Salvador Dali.
You can also visit Dali’s house in Port Lligat, near Cadaques. This is the house where the artist lived between 1930 and 1982. Advance booking is required to see inside.
The Medieval Castle in Pubol is a gothic-renaissance palace, built in the 14C, which Dali bought in this tiny village in order to restore it and turn it into a residence. In the 1970s the painter’s wife, Gala, lived there. On view are stuffed animals, murals by the artist, a sculpture garden and the crypt where Gala was laid to rest.
